Begin with the End in Mind
This week, I wanted to share a strategy I use to envision my goals and how to accomplish them. I begin with the end in mind. So, for example, when the idea of YTeach came to me, I had an idea of how an app can help a lot of students not only if they had questions but also how they could possibly explore new skills. Therefore, if you had questions in math you could ask a peer but maybe you want to learn how to play the guitar, then you could use the app to connect with someone who had that particular skill. I had not developed an app before but had some experience coding and could envision what I wanted it to look like.
So from here, I worked backwards. Start with the last step, the next to last, the third to last, until you have all your steps in reverse order. Break it down and come up with small steps you could take to get closer to accomplishing it. Then I thought, what three things could we do at that moment that would help us get closer to the goal? First, I organized my idea with a business plan. I decided how it would work and understood the big picture. Then, we reached out to a friend who had developed apps before and got an idea of what steps we would need to take to make it a reality. Finally, we came up with a design for the YTeach logo because actually seeing it made it that much more real. Oftentimes, people become either overwhelmed or just believe their idea is unrealistic. However, if you break it down and think of small steps you can take right away, you will realize that you are closer than you think.
Another important thing to consider is to give yourself a timeline to accomplish your goal. I gave myself a deadline of when I wanted to complete each step in order to makesure that I wouldn’t slow down. Some things are out of your control but it’s good to give yourself a date to complete even the small steps.
Don’t be afraid to chase after your goals. For this week’s challenge you may want to try working on your goals by focusing on what you want your end result to be and then go backwards. Come up with three things you can do right away that will get you closer, even if it’s just researching the topic or calling someone for help. Before you know it, your big idea will become a reality!
Go make it happen, Matias & the YTeach Team
